It serves as a sanctuary for homeless survivors of violence against women and young girls fleeing forced marriages. The Samburu people, including Samburu women, have traditionally faced challenges with violence and the subordinate position of women in their society. Fifteen women initially came together to establish the original Umoja village. However, the women of Umoja persevered and eventually purchased the land occupied by the men, securing their presence and independence. The women of Umoja create and sell jewelry to support the village and empower themselves economically.
