The miner's day begins not too long after midnight as they trek 6,500 feet up the side of the Mount Ijen volcano. As the men reach the top of the volcano, they begin their descent into the volcano crater where volcanic fumes and toxic gas concentrations only increase. The men have enough time in the day for two round trips, earning about 8 cents per kilogram of sulfur brought down the volcano. It is unclear what the long-term effects are from exposure to high concentrations of volcanic gas.
