Medill Drops Efforts at Accreditation in Blow to Watchdog Groups

“We find little value in the current version of accreditation,” Medill School of Journalism Dean Bradley Hamm said in a statement on Tuesday. But because the Medill accreditation is specific to its journalism and communications program, and because it will remain under the regional accreditation umbrella of Northwestern University, students won’t lose access to federal student aid. Instead, Dr. Hamm told the accreditor the school wouldn’t be participating, said Susanne Shaw, executive director of ACEJMC. Dr. Hamm isn’t the first leader to complain that the accreditation process was too laborious and not helpful. In his statement, Dr. Hamm said the 18 months and hundreds of man-hours it took to retain accreditation were neither time nor resources well spent.
