Media should do a better job of ageism awareness

Ban ageist ads in the media, Editorial, June 23It was pretty disappointing to see the ageist remarks made in the Toronto Star’s Stargazing Sunday about Jennifer Lopez being in need of a cane, due to the fact that she is approaching 50 years of age. So, while the article is highlighting ways that the media can help reduce ageism, including pointing to the solution that “Facebook must stop targeting ads to specific age groups,” the Star failed to monitor the ageist content elsewhere in their own newspaper. Unfortunately, comments like the one about Jennifer Lopez are so commonplace in the media, since the truth is we are living in an ageist society. Ageism is one of the last “acceptable” forms of discrimination and we all need to do a better job at eradicating this. Media outlets such as the Toronto Star should be helping to spread awareness on these issues — not create more of them.
