Media, Transport Among 300 Companies To Be Shut Down, Leaving Thousands Jobless In 2026

Thousands of jobs could be on the line after the government unveiled plans to deregister more than 300 companies within the next three months. A gazette notice dated January 2, 2026, shows that Registrar of Companies Damaris Lukwo has initiated the process of striking the firms off the register, starting in April. The targeted companies span multiple sectors, including consultancy, security, media, publishing, building and construction, transportation, and supply chains. “Pursuant to section 894 (3) of the Companies Act, the Registrar of Companies gives notice that the names of the companies specified hereunder shall be struck off from the Register of Companies,” reads part of the notice. Under Kenyan law, companies can cease operations either through voluntary dissolution or through removal from the register by the Registrar of Companies, an office under the Business Registration Services (BRS).
