Meat trade rides on result of EU vote

New Zealand's beef and lamb trade will be affected if Britain decides to leave the European Union, says an industry body. "Unpicking the quotas ... would also disrupt trade with the EU and cause major uncertainty," said Beef and Lamb NZ general manager trade policy Ben O'Brien. "It will be Beef and Lamb NZ's top priority to look after New Zealand sheep and beef farmer interests should the UK vote ... to leave the EU." The New Zealand sheepmeat quota to the EU of around 228,000 tonnes represents over half of the sheepmeat export production and the UK takes half of that. More than $2 billion of red meat and wool exports were sent to the EU last year.
