Meat Loaf gave many accounts of how he acquired his nickname, but the most likely version is that it derived from his weight, which topped 200 pounds in the eighth grade. He also said he was emotionally scarred during his youth by a commercial with the line, “Poor fat Marvin can’t wear Levi’s.” He later legally changed his first name to Michael, and most people called him “Meat.”
