The government will introduce the measles-rubella vaccine into routine immunisation from January 2016. Its infection in pregnant women may cause death of unborn children or cause deformation in babies. Rubella, which is often mistaken for measles, is a contagious, generally mild viral infection that mostly affects children and young adults. Health PS Nicholas Muraguri says the vaccine will be issued at 9 and 18 months. The new combined vaccine, known as MR offers protection against measles and rubella.
