New Delhi, Jan. 17: The Centre has said it will provide mid-day meals in madarsas that offer subjects such as science and math along with religious courses. "The children studying in madarsas are as much ours as those going to regular schools," minority affairs minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told a conference of state minority commissions today. Officials said madarsas under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan have been eligible for the mid-day meal programme since 2008 and many states have been implementing the plan. But ministry officials stressed that many states were yet to provide meals in madarsas. A seven-member committee has been set up to work on the modalities of encouraging madarsas to include subjects such as science and math.
