McGill University's varsity men's sports teams will now be known as the Redbirds. Men's sports teams at McGill had been known as the Redmen since 1920. Using the name "Indians" to refer to men's teams began as early as 1938, and, in the mid-1960s, women's teams began being referred to as "Squaws" or "Super Squaws." The women's teams are now known as the Martlets. According to the committee, the idea of having the same name for men's and women's teams did not fly.
