McDonald’s Corp. said renovated restaurants and new promotions helped boost U.S. sales in the first quarter, though those investments have weighed on profit. Like other fast-food chains, the burger giant has struggled to increase traffic in the U.S. as dining habits have changed and customers have gravitated to newer rivals. Visits to U.S. quick-service burger restaurants declined 1% during the first quarter, according to industry research firm the NPD Group, though spending rose 3%.
