McCrohan, whose mother Bridie hails from Tuam and who has strong connections with the Corcoran family, submitted a powerful display in sweltering conditions in Belgrade, holding off Mexico's Kenia Lechuga and Sophia Luwis for the gold medal. A former Galway Sports Stars award winner on two occasions, 36-year-old Siobhan has enjoyed much success in her career, including winning the senior single sculls and lightweight single sculls at the Irish Rowing Championships in 2015. However, McCrohan only returned to international rowing earlier this year, when she missed out by a third of a second on a medal at the European Rowing Championships in Lake Bled, Slovenia in June.
