Fourteen Mazda Demios have been stolen from around Nelson over the past five months, part of an increasing trend in vehicle crime. A surge in car thefts around the country, partly inspired through social media, has found its way to Nelson and has included 14 Mazda Demios stolen in the last five months. The trend has also hit Wellington and New Plymouth in recent months – with Mazdas seeming to be the preferred target. In other regions police said offenders appeared to be using social media to publicise what they were doing. The videos have being shared on social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat.
