Mayawati calls currency curb an undeclared economic emergency

New Delhi: Criticizing the Union government’s decision to scrap currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Thursday said that the Narendra Modi government had imposed an undeclared economic emergency through this decision. “Economic emergency like situations have been created by the government to hide their inefficiency. Referring to the Emergency imposed by the Congress government in 1975, she said that the current government’s decision was also motivated by self-interest. The BSP chief also criticised Amit Shah, Bharatiya Janata Party’s national president, for the use of the word “surgical strike”, to explain the government’s action against corruption. “It would have been fair to call the decision a surgical strike had the government executed raids against capitalists and people who are hoarding black money.
