The find was uncovered just metres from where the ancient civilisation fought their final battle with Spain at Lake Petén Itzá in Guatemala. A Polish team investigating the area have recovered hundreds of Mayan artifacts from its waters, including evidence of rituals - and even human sacrifice. And off an island in the middle of the lake, the team believe there is evidence of the final battle between the civilisation and its Spanish conquerors. We wanted to check places that seem to be very important in the history of the Itza Maya group. Another intriguing discovery relates to an island in the lake called Flores, which was once home to Nojpetén, the capital of Itza Maya.
