That May, I set off with 29 other students from across Canada to learn the story of child Holocaust survivor Pinchas Gutter. Though in the wake of the Holocaust, we have said “Never Again,” we have seen terror and genocide occur repeatedly. As I write this, Nasrin Sotoudeh languishes in an Iranian prison, sentenced to 33 years of imprisonment and 148 lashes for her tireless work as a leading human rights lawyer in Iran. And as of today, an unfathomable 70.8 million people are forcibly displaced around the world due to violence, persecution and lack of access to basic human rights. May we say “never again” and really mean it.
