May doesn’t have to wait for Brexit to cut immigration


Britain’s decision to leave the European Union in last year’s referendum had many contributing factors. Among them was a widely held frustration about controlling immigration. While the government remains committed to reducing net migration to “the tens of thousands”, it continues at historically high levels. Theresa May told parliament last month that Brexit was an opportunity “to manage the process properly so that our immigration system serves the national interest”. Even the group Leave Means Leave is convinced that a new system is required for a reduction to be possible.
