Theresa May has been warned that her favoured solution for the Irish border may be illegal under international trade law. The setback for the British prime minister comes amid reports that she warned Eurosceptic members of her party on Monday that a hard Brexit could shift centre-ground voters in Northern Ireland towards a united Ireland. David Davis, the UK Brexit secretary, is understood to have raised the threat of a legal challenge to the customs partnership in an official letter setting out his opposition to the proposal. He has the backing of other Brexit-supporting British cabinet ministers who warn that if the UK government backs the partnership plan now it would be too late to reverse the policy if significant legal obstacles emerged later.
