TOKYO — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is about to get an earful from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on what is by far the most vexing issue in Asia — China’s notorious Nine-Dash line and island building projects in the South China Sea and its other claims in the East China Sea. “Canada may be less interested in the South China Sea issue and may have weaker security interests over here. Nobody wants war in the South China Sea. You lose by only focusing on selling access to resources.”Despite grave concerns about regional security in Tokyo and elsewhere, the South China Sea was “not high on Canada’s list,” Welch said. But that will be a non-starter with German chancellor Angela Merkel, whose opinion matters by far the most on this file.
