But the fear of North Korea is of course far more visceral in Japan and South Korea. NORAD fighter bases in Cold Lake, Alta., and Bagotville, Que., and Royal Canadian Navy wharves in Halifax and Victoria would clearly be high on targeting lists. The visit of two Royal Canadian Navy warships to South Korea last week underlined that Ottawa was and is a close ally to Seoul. It was also a statement: Canada is paying attention to what North Korea is up to. If the DMZ seems a relic, North Korea has far greater ambitions today.
