RIO DE JANEIRO — Sandra Magalheas and her workmates at the Bara da Lava, atop the ramshackle Vidigal favela, were fed up with Rio’s Olympic Games before they began. Magalheas barely had time to say hello, she was so busy serving customers and cheering on the victorious Brazilian team. “It’s the Brazilian way,” laughed Gilvan Carvalho when told of his waitress’s 180-degree turn on the Olympics. “Brazilians live for the moment and the Olympics were an amazing moment,” said Adriana Oliveira. By most measures the Rio Games will not meet that expectation.
