In the 2000s, he was a superintendent at a concrete company that was very successful for a time, employed hundreds of people. Again, there were a lot of migrant labourers doing this work, too — guys who were supporting families back in Mexico. My father lost his job, his house and he just got worse and worse and worse. I just expect to get the call any day that he’s going to be dead. I talked to him and my brother four or five times a day for 15, 20 years.
