Even this modest support of Israel made Canada one of the few countries giving the Jewish state, a fellow democracy, the same right to self defence that any country has. If a Hamas cell in Detroit was lofting rockets into Windsor on a regular basis, we’d expect no less from our friends — and Canada is a friend to Israel. Canada had traditionally supported them, but beginning in 2004, had begun to edge away from UN consensus, first by abstaining, then by voting No. It seems an odd moment for Canada to break with a policy supported by Liberal and Conservative prime ministers and our major ally. If this is what foreign policy under a Trudeau minority government is going to look like, it’s going to be a bleak few years.
