This week, my hometown of Toronto marked the one-year anniversary of a terrible, tragic day. On April 23, 2018, a rented white van was driven onto sidewalks in the northern part of the city. “One year ago,” it said, “terror struck at the very heart of our capital city, our province and our country. First responders, and even journalists who covered the attack (and the attack on the Danforth neighbourhood several months later) were also changed by what they saw. A year ago, in a column I wrote after the attack, I described returning home from a meeting downtown on the afternoon of the attack.
