Matt Albers has his save. (Bill Streicher/USA TODAY Sports)PHILADELPHIA – It was a running joke in some baseball circles: Matt Albers had 460 relief appearances, finished games in 102 of them, and somehow had not notched a save. No pitcher had more relief appearances without a save since the save became an official statistic in 1969. With it, he’s been Washington’s best reliever this season and he finally got that save for a bullpen that has had three relievers close out the last three games. Really, really proud of him and happy for him.
