The country’s busiest maternity hospital has had to directly rent three houses — because healthcare staff moving to Ireland from abroad find it so difficult to find affordable accommodation. The National Maternity Hospital is not the first to try and come up with novel solutions due to the housing crisis. Earlier this year, it was revealed that the Mater Hospital was looking at buying and developing property that could then be used to accommodate “critical hospital staff” who could find nowhere else to stay. “The wider issues around recruitment of healthcare workers remain challenging, particularly in Dublin,” said a spokeswoman for the National Maternity Hospital. “There is a global shortage of healthcare workers and Ireland is competing internationally to attract and retain staff.
