On Wednesday, the U.S. National Weather Service caught something on its radars in San Diego County, California. At first glance it looks like a huge storm cloud looming over the city, but it turns out it was just bugs. On its Twitter page, the weather service posted a gif of the bug cloud, which it called a “bloom”. In June, July, and August, there could be as many as 3 billion bugs flying overhead, migrating to different climates, searching for food or mating. In 2010, the weather service reported that it had detected a similar large cloud-like object, but this time it was thousands of birds taking off from their roosting sites to look for food.
