Former Western Cape top cop Jeremy Vearey has called on the government to bring back the specialised firearm investigation unit to clamp down on illegal firearms. He made the call against the backdrop of a bloody weekend which led to the death of 19 tavern patrons. In what has been billed one of the most severe mass shootings in recent years, 15 of the 19 people were shot dead at a tavern in Nomzamo Park, Soweto during the early hours of Sunday morning, and nine people were critically injured.
