During the summer of 2013 Manchester United desperately tried to sign a player that would help begin the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era with a real statement. And worse than that, through no fault of his own, he would become the symbol of Manchester United’s decline in the post-Ferguson era. More than once there were even boos from United fans when Fellaini entered a game as a substitute. In 177 appearances for United, Fellaini scored 22 goals, including memorable efforts against West Brom, Tottenham, Manchester City, and last season’s last minute winner against Arsenal. It is an uncomfortable truth that the feeling he was simply not a Manchester United player never subsided even after five and a half seasons.
