But there’s one thing about which I think he is just plain wrong: the notion that only retribution, and not kindness, can prevent school shootings. I’m not suggesting police greet someone shooting up a school by offering him a box of chocolates and a gentle handshake. Whether any particular intervention or outreach could have prevented Cruz or Lanza from committing the horrific crimes they did is impossible to know.
