A small coalition is planning to challenge the constitutionality of the Ontario government funding the province’s separate Catholic school board. The group – called One Public Education Now (OPEN) – was founded by Torontonian Reva Landau and has two plaintiffs lined up for the potential lawsuit. The Supreme Court already ruled in 1987 that the Charter doesn’t apply to Ontario’s funding of Catholic separate schools. But would OPEN’s desired alternative – one non-denominational, two-language public school system – be the best way to fix the problem? With charter schools in the province, we’d expect to see more schools and lower costs, which in turn would create more teaching jobs.
