The reader, exasperated, wrote: “If a rich person hurting a poor person isn’t a crime, I don’t know what is.” (Many others expressed similar sentiments.) Maybe your nasty rich uncle purposely leaves a hardworking waitress a paltry tip because he’s a miser and likes to make people suffer. Maybe your kindly rich uncle generously tips a hardworking waitress a Cadillac because he likes to make people happy, but the Cadillac would otherwise have gone to a poor cousin. That doesn’t mean giving a police officer the finger is good. It just means that doing so is, and should be, seen as a personal failing or triumph, not a crime.
