The Dow Jones industrials bucked the downward trend Wednesday and managed a small gain, their ninth straight and enough to mark another record high. The Dow Jones industrial average edged up 32 points, or 0.2 percent, to 20,775. More stocks fell than rose on the New York Stock Exchange.
