KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Social activist Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir has welcomed the proposal to set the minimum legal age for marriage for men and women at 18. “This (the 18-year minimum age ruling) is a good move but what we want is strict enforcement so that people do not get married before that. “The minimum age should be increased to 18, but if there are loopholes which allow under-aged marriages, where you can apply to the Syariah Court or minister's office to marry, then this would be a problem,” she said after a recording of The Nation programme on Bernama News Channel on Monday. Earlier, Sultan Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah consented to the proposal by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) and the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) that the minimum age for marriage for Muslim men and women to be changed from 16 to 18. "The stigma that is attached to these women is going to last forever, the humiliation, the scars, the trauma is going to last forever.
