Marijuana Extract Cuts Seizure Rate In Half For Rare Epilepsy Type

Children and young adults with a rare, debilitating type of epilepsy experienced half as many seizures while taking a cannabinoid drug, found a new study. About two out of five children (43%) in the cannabidiol group saw their seizure rates cut in half, but 62% saw at least some improvement overall. In the placebo group, participants’ seizures only dropped from an average 14.9 to 14.1 seizures per month, and only 27% experienced at least a 50% drop in their seizures. Total seizures in the cannabidiol group dropped by 29%, compared to 9% in the placebo group. Eight patients dropped out of the cannabidiol group due to side effects, compared to just one in the placebo group.
