Margaret Hooks, who has died of cancer aged 76, was the author of an acclaimed biography of Tina Modotti and of many studies of female artists and surrealists. In all, Hooks published eight books, mainly focused on topics or subjects involving women, art and artists. Born in Belfast, she was the eldest of six children of Edward Hooks, a small businessman and elder in the local Plymouth Brethren congregation, and Adeline (nee Colgan).
