Regarding your editorial “The Price of the Union at GM” (Oct. 19): For every GM employee at an assembly plant, there are at least 30 working at suppliers providing parts, materials and services to those plants. These are known as Tier 1, 2 and 3 suppliers. Tier 1s supply directly to the OEM, Tier 2s to the Tier 1s, etc. During the strike almost all the tier suppliers were forced to shut down or seriously curtail their operations, meaning layoffs (union and nonunion alike).
