This week, Xometry, an intermediary for quick turnaround parts, raised $50m from Dell, BMW, and GE, among others. Other providers also raised capital in the last 2 months, including 3D Hubs ($18m) and Fictiv ($33m). The MaaS business model reduces capital requirements by providing no or minimal in-house production. They are deploying capital despite unanswered questions about the business model. A whole slew of pure software startups are supporting traditional machine shops to rival both Protolabs and Xometry.
