Manipur govt criticises ‘The Hindu’ editorial on state conflict

Imphal: The Manipur government has strongly criticized an editorial published by ‘The Hindu‘ on May 15, 2024, titled “Lame excuses: On Manipur and the ethnic conflict.” The state government claims that the editorial unfairly defames the measures taken by both the Central and State governments to resolve the unrest in Manipur, characterizing them as “oversimplifications and biased” views of the conflict. According to the Manipur government, ‘The Hindu’ lacks a clear understanding of the deeper issues in the region. The influx of illegal immigrants has been an ongoing issue, exacerbated by the military coup in Myanmar. During initial field visits, 2,187 illegal immigrants were found at 41 locations across Manipur. This identification drive caused panic among the illegal immigrants, contributing to the outbreak of violence.
