Manhattan borough president says de Blasio can pedestrianize streets without cops

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer has a solution to Mayor Bill de Blasio’s claim there aren’t enough cops to turn streets into socially-distanced play zones during the COVID-19 pandemic: Don’t use cops. Brewer told The Post a group of Manhattan Business Improvement Districts is proposing turning Broadway into a miles-long pedestrian plaza that would be patrolled and maintained by employees of the local business improvement districts. “They don’t need police officers, they want to do it themselves,” she said. “There is the general feeling that people aren’t going to want to be in a crowded restaurant,” she said. De Blasio nixed New York City own’s pandemic street closures after less than two weeks, citing a shortage of cops to enforce social distancing.
