José Mourinho will never be garlanded with credit for some of his views, because of his reputation as the Moaning Minnie of Management, but he does make pertinent points about issues bedevilling the English game. He is also the only manager in the Premier League who tried, albeit futilely, to respond to Manchester City’s spectacular hegemony. All this discourse about his future as Manchester United manager needs leavening with perspective. It would help if he smiled occasionally, showing an appreciation of the honour and joy of managing an iconic club, and being remunerated generously for it, but English football would be poorer without Mourinho.
