Protests raged outside and inside Old Trafford on Sunday, with Manchester United fans making it clear that they want the end of the Glazers’ ownership of the club. The American owners have long been unpopular, but their involvement in the failed European Super League plan has created more anger among the fanbase. Schmeichel recognises that a fan-owned club would be the perfect scenario, but with Manchester United likely to cost around $4bn, that scenario is not a realistic option. ‘The issue here is that it will be like $4bn, I don’t know who’s got $4bn that will buy Manchester United and make it better. ‘I would much rather try and work with the current owners and see if it’s possible to get them to understand what the football club is all about.
