The name of the team based at Old Trafford for next year's new 100-ball tournament is set to be the Manchester Originals. It emerged last month that the ECB had applied for trademarks for six of the eight sides: London Spirit (based at Lord's), Birmingham Phoenix (Edgbaston), Leeds Superchargers (Headingley), Southern Brave (Southampton), Trent Rockets (Nottingham) and Welsh Fire (Cardiff). But two teams were not on the website of the UK's International Property Office: the side based at The Oval (an amalgamation of Surrey and Kent) and the one at Old Trafford (Lancashire). The team based at Old Trafford for 100-ball tournament is to be named Manchester OriginalsSportsmail revealed that the Oval set-up had rejected four names suggested to them by brand consultancy firm Futurebrand: London Fuse, London Rebels, London Union and London X. But the Lancashire side will adopt a name supposed to reflect the city's reputation for innovation – from its central role in the Industrial Revolution to the music of The Stone Roses and Oasis.
