The Manawatū Scottish Centre on Princess St is undergoing an earthquake strengthening upgrade. A gaping hole in the side of a Palmerston North community hall has announced the start of a thorough seismic strengthening upgrade. Manawatū Scottish Society treasurer Neil Doherty has overseen maintenance on the group’s Princess St hall for 30 years. He has helped organise funding and planning for the upgrade since the Palmerston North City Council told the society it needed earthquake strengthening three years ago. The society’s supporters have also formed The Friends of the Manawatū Scottish Society, to help raise money, and for the past two years each member has donated $20 a month towards the seismic strengthening costs.
