A man has serious burns after being engulfed in flames while burning rubbish in a paddock near Christchurch. Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Mau Barbara said emergency services were called to the blaze at a rural property on Guys Rd in Yaldhurst, west of the city, about 11am on Saturday. The man had been tending to the fire and thew something into it, causing the flames to blow back onto him and burn his body, Barbara said. A fire investigator was at the scene determining the cause of the blaze, Barbara said. The man was being taken to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance.
