Man police shot dead in Papatoetoe absconded from electronic bail on weapons charge

The ‘501’ deportee police shot dead in Auckland had weeks earlier absconded from electronically-monitored bail while awaiting sentencing on a weapons charge, Stuff has learned. Tangaru-Noere Turia, 34, died after police shot him following an incident at Avis Ave, Papatoetoe, on Thursday night. Police said Turia came out of a house brandishing a shotgun and when he refused to drop the weapon, they opened fire. Several weeks before his death, he absconded from his court-ordered bail address while subject to electronically-monitored bail, Stuff understands. Media liaison staff for both police and Corrections declined to answer questions from Stuff about Turia's bail status, what charges he faced and absconding from electronic bail.
