Man pleads guilty after Kashechewan breakfast program defrauded

The federal government needs to review how it grants contracts for services on reserves in the wake of a massive fraud against a children’s breakfast program in the northern Ontario Kashechewan Cree community, a First Nations leader said. “I am disgusted that Kashechewan was robbed by someone entrusted by the federal government to support the daily management of their community,” Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler said on Tuesday in a prepared statement. “How low can somebody go— to actually take kids breakfast money,” Fiddler said. His comments came after Giuseppe (Joe) Crupi, who was appointed co-manager of Kashechewan, pleaded guilty earlier this month on two counts of fraud over $5,000. “This was an unconscionable act, and we hope that the harshest possible sentence may serve as a deterrent for anyone daring to seek personal gain at the expense of our communities,” Fiddler said.
