John Richard Murphy is loaded into a police car in Woodville after shooting a man and kidnapping his stepdaughter. A man's desire to control his adult stepdaughter's life spiralled out of control when he kidnapped her and shot her partner. He made his wife and daughter travel to a Dannevirke house, where his 30-year-old stepdaughter was living with a man. The trio then went to take Murphy's stepdaughter from the house, but she grabbed furniture and yelled she did not want to leave. Defence lawyer Paul Murray said Murphy thought his stepdaughter was in danger from the man and went to see her with good intentions.
