Justice Brewer described the December 2014 offending as "cruel and degrading" and jailed the man for six-and-a-half years. Justice Brewer rejected that explanation and said the man had exploited the victim's vulnerability and his own power over her. A south Auckland man forced his gagged teenage girlfriend to let him smash her finger with a hammer while he played reggae music in the background. It wasn't clear how long she was detained for but "it was not for a fleeting moment," Justice Brewer said.
