Man finds mortar shell at Whitby park

A souvenir hunter in Whitby unearthed a mortar shell Tuesday night, digging it up by hand before realizing it was an explosive device. Durham police arrived at Intrepid Park, formerly known as “Camp X,” a Second World War training ground, after receiving a call that the shell was found. The hobbyist found the mortar shell with a metal detector, dug it up and sent a picture of his find to a family member without initially realizing it was an explosive device, police said. “This is the first report I’ve seen regarding a find like this,” Durham Regional Police Sgt. The photo of the mortar shell was taken by the hobbyist before he learned of it’s “potential danger,” Calder said.
